Kitchen staffs on duty at Ikot Ekpene Prison in Akwa-Ibom were attacked by prisoners on Wednesday, leading to their escape.
This was revealed in a statement made by ASP Ogbajie J. Ogbajie, Command Public Relations Officer to newsmen.
According to reports, prisoners seized an axe from a fellow inmate attached to the kitchen, using it to inflict deep cut on other inmates’ and thereafter made for the rear entrance of the prison.
“They broke the door with the axe and engaged staff who chased after them”,
“At the end of the scuffle, 4 inmates sustained gun shot and lost their lives while 7 were recaptured.
“36 are deemed still at large and search is on the way to recapture them.”
Meanwhile, the Controller of Prisons Akwa Ibom State Command, Alex Oditah has ordered an investigation into the circumstance surrounding the unfortunate incident.
The CP appealed to members of the public to assist authorities with information that will help in the re-arrest of fleeing prisoners assuring that security has been reinforced at all prison formations in the State to forestall further breach of security.
