With the end of the year
fast-approaching, the time has come for all of those end-of-year round-ups.
Along with the highest-paid
models and the most liked
brands on Instagram, new research by
fashion search platform Lyst has now revealed this year’s most looked up terms.
Taking the top spot was ‘power’, although maybe it
referred to a lack of it? It could also be referring to the power suits and
shoulders that we saw at Vetements, Saint Laurent and Balenciaga. Empowerment is
a running theme in the list, with ‘woke’ coming in second place. After finding
itself added to the Oxford English Dictionary this summer,
activism also cropped up on the runway via Dior’s “We should all
be feminists” t-shirts, as well as pro-black
sweaters and that viral Frank Ocean tee.
While you might think ‘ugly’ is a surprising word to make
the list, brands seem to have pushed ugly-chic to the limit this year. At the
forefront of the trend is undoubtedly Balenciaga, championing dad dressing
with IRL dads on
the runway and turning an Ikea bag and Crocs into
must-have items. Elsewhere on the list were more obvious phrases like florals,
extra and millennial. The latter probably thanks to Gucci, who reportedly pool
the knowledge of a secret panel of them.
Maybe most surprisingly rounding off the top ten, is
‘vegan’. While Fashion
Revolution Week revealed fashion’s top brands were far from
ethical, there has been more conversation around the topic. Gucci made the
decision to go fur-free from
next season and Pamela
Anderson wrote a
letter to Kim K to tell her to
stop wearing real fur. While you might not want to see more ugly fashion (read:
Crocs) on the runway next year, hopefully, brands will all take a step towards
being more ethical in 2018.
